Kids Up is built on Orton-Gillingham, combined with the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy. We use the Kilpatrick program to develop phonological awareness and OG to teach phonics, fluency, morphology and spelling rules in a systematic, explicit sequence. Tucson is where Kids Up was founded, and our tutors have deep familiarity with students across TUSD, CFSD, BASIS, the Gregory School and other local schools. Kids Up works with students in grades 1 through 12, and occasionally with college students at the U of A or Pima Community College still working to close phonics or spelling gaps. The program scales from a first grader in Sam Hughes just beginning to decode all the way up to a high schooler at Catalina Foothills or Salpointe preparing for the ACT. Most Kids Up students reach grade level in 4 to 9 months. The key variable is frequency. Most students do 3 to 4 sessions per week, and that consistency is what drives fast progress. Where your child is starting from matters too, and we get a thorough picture of that during the literacy evaluation. Spelling typically takes longer to close than reading, and timelines vary by student and goal.
