Be on the lookout for these risk factors and warning signs that may indicate your child or teen has dyslexia or other reading challenges:

Family & Early Development

Family history of reading or spelling difficulties

Delayed speech or trouble pronouncing specific letters/words

Difficulty with rhyming

Reading & Spelling Patterns

Memorizes words instead of sounding them out

Guesses at words using only the first few letters

Drops sounds or letters when spelling (example: "slip" becomes "sip")

Still confuses b/d after second grade

Struggles to recognize the same word repeatedly

Emotional Response

Self-conscious about reading aloud

"Hates" reading or avoids it entirely

Only reads graphic novels or picture-heavy books

Important: We're tutors, not psychologists. We can't diagnose dyslexia, but we can teach every child and teen to read—dyslexic or not.
