Maryland Reading & Dyslexia Tutors (Online)

Maryland's Ready to Read Act requires your child's school to provide supplemental reading instruction if screening identifies them as at risk.

If progress is slow after a full marking period, or if you suspect dyslexia, request a meeting with the school reading specialist and ask what tier of intervention your child is receiving and how progress is being measured. Many Maryland families add 1-on-1 private tutoring at this point because school intervention is typically delivered in small groups, 1–3 times per week, not enough dosage to close a meaningful gap quickly.

Kids Up rates are $135/hour with a Tutor, $160/hour with a Senior Tutor, and $200/hour with the founder. A one-time literacy evaluation is $500. There are no packages or contracts, you pay session by session. Most Maryland families do 3–4 sessions per week for 4–9 months until their child catches up.

Yes. Many Kids Up families in MCPS, BCPS, HCPSS, and other Maryland districts use private tutoring alongside their child's IEP or 504 Plan. We provide written progress updates and skills documentation that parents can share with their school team at annual reviews or IEP meetings. We don't replace school services — we add the high-dosage, 1-on-1 Orton-Gillingham instruction that's difficult for a school to provide at the frequency most struggling readers need.

Yes. Orton-Gillingham is delivered over Zoom using shared screens, digital decodable texts, and the equivalent multisensory routines used in person. For Maryland families, online removes the biggest practical barrier: traffic. Driving a child from Frederick or Annapolis to a Montgomery County dyslexia specialist limits most families to one session per week. Online makes 3–4 sessions per week realistic, and that frequency is what drives the 4–9 month timeline.

Most Kids Up students reach grade level in 4–9 months when doing 3–4 sessions per week. The timeline depends on starting skill level, how far behind your child is, and how consistently sessions run. Spelling typically takes longer than reading because English spelling depends on morphology and word origin as well as phonics. After the evaluation, we'll share an honest estimate based on your child's specific profile.
